What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral FAQ

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a technique in which the practitioner “listens” to a patient’s craniosacral rhythm in order to locate areas of stagnation and disharmony in the body. This unique rhythm, first discovered by osteopathic doctors, is essentially the flow of cerebrospinal fluid throughout the brain, spinal cord, and surrounding structures. Practitioners of craniosacral practice for many hours in order to discern and follow this rhythm.

What does a craniosacral session look like?

In a CST session, the practitioner usually places their hands lightly upon the top of the head in order to contact the craniosacral rhythm, which is used to locate the exact area of stagnation, or THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

Whether a bone in the skull, a shoulder, vertebral segment, or organ, the practitioner gently guides and coaxes normal movement and rhythm back into the area. The practitioner will then reassess the rhythm to see if there are other areas, one layer deeper now, that wish to be addressed.

This process - locating areas of stagnation, then gently releasing and unwinding the area to reestablish flow and harmony within the body and nervous system - goes on until the body communicates through the craniosacral rhythm that it has had enough for the day, and the session ends. Sessions can be very relaxing, although it is common to have an emotional release through the body as it lets go of stored emotions and trauma.

What is craniosacral good for?

Craniosacral is a fantastic and minimally invasive way to stimulate a person’s vital force (the body’s innate healing capacity). By locating and removing blockages in the body, the natural intelligence within the body is activated. The vital force - the self organizing, self healing capacity of the body - is activated and supported. In other words, the body and nervous system are better able to do what they do.

Craniosacral is used to relieve and treat many conditions, like chronic pain, stress, anxiety, neurological complaints, chronic migraines, neck/shoulder pain, and trauma, just to name a few.

Who couldn’t use a little stimulation of the vital force?

Step into greater coherence between the brain and body, step into greater alignment with yourself.
